The Philippine Consulate General in Guam gave away last Friday cash assistance to Philippine households on Saipan that were affected by Super Typhoon Yutu, while a private company chipped in as well.

According to vice consul Alex Vallespin, the Philippine Consulate General distributed a total of $20,000 to 400 Philippine households on Saipan.

TanHoldings Corp. president Jerry Tan contributed an additional $10,000 that were split up and given to an additional 200 families in the afternoon, totaling 600 families who were assisted.

Vallespin emphasized that the $20,000 from the Philippine government was an initial response and that more cash relief distributions will be handed out during the consulate general’s upcoming mobile consular outreach from Nov. 14 through Nov. 16, 2018.

“This is an initial relief assistance. We [distributed] $50 per family,” he said, adding that in order for one to claim the distributions, a passport must be provided.

“With the budget that we have, we could accommodate 400 at $50 per family. Even prior to Yutu, we had a scheduled consular outreach visit, so we would be here again Nov. 14, 2018 through Nov. 16, 2018,” he said, adding that the team would be flying over to Rota on Nov. 17 to provide financial assistance to Filipino nationals affected by Typhoon Mangkhut, which struck the southernmost island of the NMI last September.

For Tinian, Vallespin noted that the consulate has yet to get word about damage assessment as of Friday morning. Consular assistance to Filipinos on Tinian “is to follow,” he said.

Vallespin did not disclose a total amount to be given away but did clarify that families who have claimed relief last Friday are ineligible to claim relief assistance a second time.
