Hopwood in shambles; closed indefinitely
Admiral Herbert G. Hopwood Middle School in Chalan Piao sustained massive damage after Super Typhoon Yutu, causing the school to close indefinitely as alternatives for the academic year have yet to be discussed.
Based on a quick visual assessment, the school sustained major damage to all of its buildings, which number about 10.
Principal Dr. Rizalina Liwag noted that Yutu damaged every room. There are about 70 total rooms in the campus.
“…It seems that every classroom, or every room in this school [had been] affected,” she said, adding that an official assessment on the school campus has yet to be made. “Right now our focus is to assess all the damage of the school.”
“There is no information yet on how long the school would be closed,” she added.
Interim Education commissioner Glenn Muna noted, in a statement posted yesterday on the Public School System social media page, that public schools on Saipan and Tinian would be “closed until further notice.”
“PSS is currently working on a plan to get schools open as soon as possible. For now, please keep an eye on further updates on our Facebook page as information will be posted weekly,” he said.
When asked on the possible options for parents and students on alternatives for their education, Liwag noted that it has yet to be discussed.
