CNMI courts sustain damage due to Yutu

The local courts on Saipan and Tinian weren’t spared damage from the onslaught of Super Typhoon Yutu.

According to a press release from the CNMI Judiciary, the Guma’ Hustisia on Saipan sustained major damage and is currently unsafe for both the public and staff. It is closed until further notice

The Kotten Tinian sustained minor damage and is anticipated to be operational within a week.

The Centron Hustisia on Rota is operational and open to the public during regular business hours.

The Judiciary’s alternative site at the Northern Marianas College sustained damage that must be assessed before operations can occur.

However, court hearings will continue to be scheduled at the U.S. District Court for the Northern Mariana Islands.

The Judiciary has not identified an appropriate site to conduct traffic cases just yet. An announcement will be made at a later date regarding the venue for traffic cases.

The Judiciary is currently working to find other alternate sites to provide essential court services, ensure access to justice, and provide a continuity of court operations.

“We appreciate the public’s patience and understanding as we work toward rebuilding our Judiciary and our islands,” states the release.
