BREAKING NEWS: ‘Tinian damage catastrophic; access to fuel an issue’

Super Typhoon Yutu’s damage on Tinian is catastrophic, with many left homeless, according to Commonwealth Ports Authority board financial affairs committee chair Kimberlyn King-Hinds Saturday night.

She said almost all of the power lines are down and access to fuel is an issue because both gas stations are inoperable at the moment.

“But we hope that with the cooperation and collaboration between the government and the private sector, that particular issue can soon be addressed,” she said.

King-Hinds, a native of Tinian, was not on the island when Yutu battered Tinian and Saipan, but she went there Friday where she witnessed the “complete devastation.”

She disclosed that Gov. Ralph DLG. Torres was on Tinian Friday, along with the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s head to make some preliminary assessments to move assets to address immediate priority needs such as food and water.

King-Hinds said she is thankful that Tinian Mayor Joey Patrick San Nicolas has multi-agency crews that stepped up the plate to provide much needed relief, at least on a temporary basis, as the island begins working toward long-term recovery.

“We are thankful for those who, despite their complete loss to property, have sacrificed their personal needs to step up to the plate to help the community first to set up basic infrastructure capabilities to provide the necessary relief to others,” the lawyer said.
