BREAKING NEWS: Secondary band anticipated to pass over Saipan, Tinian
Brunt of Super Typhoon Yutu has passed
The eye of what is now being described as the “Worst Storm of 2018,” Super Typhoon Yutu, has made its passage over the islands of Saipan and Tinian. However, the CNMI Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management, in coordination with the National Weather Service, is now issuing another urgent warning to the community.
A secondary band, otherwise referred to by meteorologists as a “concentric eyewall”, is currently expected to pass over the islands of Saipan and Tinian over the next hour. Concentric eyewalls typically form during intense storms of 185 mph carrying with it rain, heavy winds and thunderstorms.
HSEM continues to advise the community to remain indoors as typhoon-strength winds are still being expected over the next couple of hours. Once the secondary band has made its passage over Saipan and Tinian, winds will then begin to dissipate. This does not mean conditions will be safe to venture outdoors. For the safety of the community, and the safety of first responders, HSEM urges residents to remain indoors until the “all clear” has been issued by Gov. Ralph DLG Torres.
Storm surges of 20 feet or higher are also expected along the coastal waters of Saipan and Tinian. Refrain from being close to these coastal areas as inundation is imminent, posing life-threatening risk for those living along the coast. Stay out of the water. Mariners, especially those who are inexperienced, should not be operating a vessel at this time. (HSEM)
