PEGS rallies to beat Armatech in OT
PEGS eked out a come-from-behind victory against Armatech in overtime, 80-72, during their game in the IT&E Emon Masonic Lodge No. 179 Mixed Masters Brotherhood Basketball League last Saturday at the Koblerville Gymnasium.
Gino Libuw scored 9 of his 15 points in the extra period, while Melvin Villarin made a pair of baskets to hand PEGS the win.
Armatech was on top throughout the game, but PEGS remained persistent and stole the victory.
PEGS was behind by as much as 14 points in the third period and was still facing a double-digit deficit at the start of the fourth, 37-48, when Dennis Geron led the team’s recovery. Geron aggressively attacked the basket, set his teammates up, and headed to the line multiple times to score 15 points in the final canto. Libuw and Rasa also backed up Geron in helping PEGS force the standoff at the end of the regulation, 65-all. Libuw then took over in the extension to complete PEGS’ comeback.
Geron and Villarin top-scored for PEGS with 21 points apiece. Villarin delivered 13 points in the second quarter, which was enough to keep PEGS within striking distance after the first half, 27-29. Don Brennan and Ponce Rasa added 11 each.
Alex Lauron and Bernard Montano finished the game with 13 points apiece, while Renren Gaviola contributed 10 points. Jun Alipio Jr. had 9 points for Armatech with 5 coming in overtime where his team was held to two field goals.
