Tinian senatorial candidate to go to trial
A Tinian senatorial candidate who was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol has been given an official trial date.
Tinian senatorial candidate Eric Henry Cruz San Nicolas, who pleaded not guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol back in August, has been given an official bench trial date.
The Superior Court has set San Nicolas’ bench trial for Dec. 20, 2018, at 1:30pm.
San Nicolas is adamant about fighting the citation in court because he claims the DUI allegations against him are false.
Aside from a DUI charge, San Nicolas was also charged with reckless driving, failure to undergo a breathalyzer test, and license violations.
San Nicolas is among four other Tinian independent candidates who submitted petitions for nomination for Senate and House of Representatives seats.
According to Saipan Tribune archives, San Nicolas used to serve as vice principal for Tinian High School before he became a Commonwealth Utilities Corp. board member, and is now running for a senatorial seat for the Tinian district.
In a previous article, Department of Public Safety spokesperson Jacqueline Rae stated that a woman called the department back in July 28 about a theft incident involving San Nicolas but when officers arrived at the scene, San Nicolas was not there. Rae said San Nicolas returned a short time later and returned the items to the woman.
Rae said police officers, however, cited San Nicolas with DUI at that time.
Rae said the incident happened in Koblerville at 1:23am.
