The Friends of the Library, the charitable arm of the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library, was able to secure a monetary donation from Triple J over the weekend.

JKPL technical services librarian Beth Demapan told Saipan Tribune that Triple J donated about $2,500, and the money will go to the 4th Annual JKPL Golf Tournament, slated for Oct. 27, 2018.

According to Demapan, the golf event raises money to fund the library’s events all year long. Last year, the event was able to raise $10,000, which went to programs and events of the library and its branches on Rota and Tinian.

“We want to thank sponsors last year who helped…almost 1,500 children read in our main library this summer,” she said.

The library’s events include the Collaborative Summer Library Program, which runs from June to August, and is currently the library’s most popular activity annually. It reportedly averages 75 to 100 kids a day, and was able to serve 74,166 patrons and 588 class visits altogether over the last year.

With weekly visits to various remote communities throughout Saipan, the JKPL Bookmobile Outreach Literacy Services served 57,677 patrons, with 4,811 library card applications entertained, 552 library cards issued, 6,631 laptop uses, and 1,644 internet sessions.

Show time for the golf tournament is at 6:30am, while tee time starts an hour later at the Laolao Bay Golf & Resort’s west courses. The first place winner pockets $400, second place gets $350, third gets $300, fourth gets $250, and fifth gets $200.

Hole-in-one prizes include $5,000, while the longest drive for Hole 10 gets $150. The most accurate drive for Hole 9 is awarded $150.
