The Garapan Community Development Center has teamed up with the CNMI Women’s Association in hosting on a double-elimination girls basketball tournament open to female players up to 17 years old, this Friday starting at 5:30pm at the Garapan Basketball Court.

Up to six teams are expected to turn out and slots are still available; there is no entrance fee.

The five-on-five full court event aims to promote the overall development of young female players.

“Most activities and events are provided for boys, but we also want to promote an active lifestyle through sports for girls in the community. We have noticed a number of female players that show interest in the game of basketball and feel that it is just as important to support their development,” said GCDC’s Joe Diaz.

The event serves as good practice for a number of up and coming female players that very well be representing the CNMI in the highly anticipated Micronesian Basketball Tournament, which Saipan will be hosting this May.

This Friday marks the first part of a two-round event.

The tournament will conclude on the following Friday, Feb. 24, after which trophies will be presented to the Top 2 finishers.

The timely presence of all teams are requested as this Friday’s opening matchups will be randomly determined.

To register or for more information, stop by the GCDC office located behind the Garapan court or call 233-8978.
