Two awareness events in October
The month of October has been dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer and fire prevention n the CNMI.
In a joint proclamation signing last Thursday that was attended by both the Department of Fire and Emergency Management Services and the Commonwealth Cancer Association, Gov. Ralph DLG Torres urged all women in the CNMI to visit the Commonwealth Health Center to discuss a preventive and screening program with their health provider and become aware if they are at risk of breast cancer.
Torres also said his administration would finalize plans to upgrade CHC’s hospital equipment, especially its current mammogram machine in order to ensure breast cancer can be detected as early as possible.
According to CCA board president Bo Palacios, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in the CNMI.
Although the association has been working on lowering the number of breast cancer cases in the CNMI, the number only continues to grow, which means that awareness is needed now more than ever.
Throughout the month of October, the CCA will be conducting various outreach events to spread breast cancer awareness. These include radio appearances, community outreach, and a breast cancer awareness walk that is open to the public.
The first week of October has also been dedicated to Fire Prevention Awareness. Week. The Department of Fire and Emergency Management Services will be doing outreaches to spread awareness about the importance of fire prevention.
The American Red Cross-NMI Chapter has also volunteered to install fire alarms in as many homes as possible on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota.
The chapter has already installed over 700 fire alarms in the CNMI since 2017 and aims to install more this year.
