Grace Christian Academy 1 and Saipan International School earned contrasting wins in the 2018-2019 Commonwealth Coalition of Private Schools Association Volleyball League last Tuesday to remain at the top half of the team standings.
The Geckos needed three sets to beat Saipan Community School at the SIS court in As Lito, while GCA 1 showed no love lost to sister squad GCA 2 after a victory via sweep at the Eagles turf in Navy Hill.
Though GCA 1 took only two sets to prevail against GCA 2, the latter still gave the former a tough fight, as seen in the match’s final scores, 25-21, 25-21. With the victory, GCA 1 hiked its record to 9-0 and strengthened its hold to the top spot in the team standings. GCA 2, on the other hand, fell to a 5-5 mark and slid from third place to fifth.
SIS dislodged GCA 2 from the No. 3 spot after winning over SCS in an extended game early this week. The Geckos notched a 25-14 triumph in the first set, but missed the outright victory when SCS got even in the second, 25-11. Then in the deciding third set, SIS pulled off a 15-12 win to move up to the rankings. The Geckos now have a 5-4 record and ended a three-game slide that started with their loss to Mt. Carmel last Sept. 13.
The Knights are also back on track following a three-set victory over Agape Christian School 2 last Tuesday at the Agape court in Middle Road. Mt. Carmel now holds a 5-4 record for a tie for fourth placce with SIS and behind GCA 1 and Agape 1.
Agape 1 kept the No. 2 spot, as it improved to a 7-2 slate after defeating Seventh Day Adventist last Tuesday. SDA is still at the bottom half of the team standings (seventh place) with its 2-7 record, ahead of Agape 2, which has yet win a single match after nine games. SCS is ranked No. 6 with its 3-7 mark. SCS was scheduled to face Agape 1 in the lone match set for yesterday and results of the game were unavailable as off press time.
Today, three matches will take place in two courts. At the MCS Gymnasium, the Knights will host SDA in the 3:30pm game, while over at the GCA court, GCA 1 and 2 will duel Agape 2 and SIS in the 3:30pm and 4:30pm matches, respectively.
