IN MAYOR ATALIG’S TRIAL
FBI summons former medical referral acting director
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has summoned the former acting director of the CNMI/Guam Medical Referral Services to testify at the trial of Rota Mayor M. Atalig.
Documents filed yesterday before the U.S. District Court for the NMI showed that the FBI served Anamaria A. Inos with a subpoena at the medical referral office in Tamuning, Guam last Thursday.
She was directed to appear at Atalig’s trial in the district court on Oct. 16 at 10am.
The FBI also summoned Julia R. Rivera of the Naval Base, Guam to testify. Rivera was also served the subpoena last Thursday and was also directed to appear at the Oct. 16 trial.
A federal grand jury had indicted the 58-year-old Atalig on a count of wire fraud. He had pleaded not guilty.
Atalig allegedly arranged a government-funded trip from Rota to Guam for himself and 12 others, including eight municipal employees, on an allegedly false claim that he was going to check for surplus equipment at the Naval Base in Guam. The indictment alleges that the mayor actually went there to participate in a partisan political rally last June 23 in Mangilao.
Atalig is facing another case that the Office of the Attorney General filed before the Superior Court arising from the same political rally.
In the Superior Court case, Atalig and seven other Rota municipal officials are being charged each with theft and misconduct in public office. Their arraignment will be on Sept. 28, 2018.
Through his private counsel, Robert O’Connor, Atalig said he did nothing wrong.
