SIS’ Michael Lee is named NMSC semifinalist
Michael Lee, a student at Saipan International School, has been selected as the CNMI’s only National Merit Scholarship semifinalist in 2018.
Lee is tied for the first-place rank in his class and has been awarded with the distinction of AP Scholar with Distinction. This year, he is continuing his pursuit of academic excellence by attempting a rigorous college-preparatory course schedule, including four AP classes and self-studying for AP Computer Science. Additionally, Lee is the 2018-2019 Student Council president and vice president of SIS’ Rotary Interact Club. He was on four CNMI Junior Statesmen of America scholars in 2018, attending a summer program at Princeton University.
Lee was among the approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program that were announced by officials of National Merit Scholarship Corp. on Sept. 12, 2018.
These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be offered next spring.
To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of competition.
Over 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and about half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.
NMSC, a not-for-profit organization, was established in 1955 to conduct the National Merit Scholarship Program. Scholarships are underwritten by NMSC with its own funds and by approximately 410 business organizations and higher education institutions.
