691 cubic yards of Mangkhut debris collected on Saipan
The Saipan Mayor’s Office collected about 691 cubic yards of debris brought about the onslaught of Typhoon Mangkhut.
According to Saipan Mayor’s Office director of field operations Joann Aquino, they collected 691 cubic yards of green debris as of Monday afternoon.
Green debris pertains to leaves, branches, and other agricultural waste. To put into perspective, there is one cubic yard in one full load of the mayor’s office’s dump truck.
Aquino noted that the collection of green debris was initiated even before Mangkhut left the CNMI.
“We utilized all our trailers, our claw truck, our backhoe, and our dump truck to [collect] the debris,” she said, adding that the office continues to work on debris removal.
Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang told Saipan Tribune that there are several other areas on Saipan that still needs\ help cleaning up.
“We are still going around the other villages. We have been to Koblerville, Kagman I, II, and III, San Vicente, Dandan, and more and we are still working on the northern part of the island,” he said.
“The Kagman area especially is a huge village—it consists of Kagman I, II, and III. We are not even done there,” said Aquino, adding that there was only one crew assigned to the village.
“We have been to Koblerville, San Jose, San Antonio. We are still going around Saipan because there are residents who call for the mayor’s office to pick up green debris,” she added.
According to Apatang, his office would continue its recovery efforts until a notice from the Governor’s Office reaches his desk.
“This is an ongoing recovery process [and we would not stop] until we receive a letter from the governor to stop,” he added.
