USDA to replace lost food stamp benefits
Guam Residents have until Oct. 9 to replace lost food purchased through SNAP program
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Delegate Madeleine Z. Bordallo (D-Guam) has announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service has approved a disaster-recovery waiver for Guam under the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly referred to as “food stamps.”
This waiver will allow Guam residents, eligible for SNAP benefits, to obtain additional federal benefits to replace any SNAP-purchased food lost as a result of Typhoon Mangkhut. The U.S. Department of Agriculture issued this waiver following Bordallo’s request for a federal emergency declaration for Guam and the governor’s subsequent request to President Trump.
Affected Guam residents eligible for SNAP should contact the Guam Department of Public Health and Social Services before close of business on Oct. 9, 2018, to obtain replacement SNAP benefits typhoon recovery. DPHSS is the local GovGuam agency responsible for administering federal SNAP benefits on Guam.
“Our neediest families can now get additional SNAP benefits to replace food spoiled or damaged by Typhoon Mangkhut. This is exactly the type of federal aid needed as our island recovers.
