CEC chair pro tem Sablan’s term expiring next month
The third four-year term of Commonwealth Election Commission chair pro tem Jesus I. Sablan will expire next month. As of yesterday, he hasn’t been re-appointed yet.
CEC administrative officer Kayla Igitol said that she called the governor’s office yesterday to inform them about the expiration of Sablan’s term.
Igitol said a staff stated that she would notify Gov. Ralph DLG Torres about it.
Sablan’s term will expire on Oct. 27, less than two weeks before the Nov. 6 general election.
Sablan was first appointed as CEC commissioner in 2007. He is representing Saipan and the Northern Islands.
Sablan is serving chairman pro tem because CEC has no chairperson following the expiration of the term of former chair Frances M. Sablan in August 2017.
Each commissioner has a four-year term and requires Senate confirmation.
At present, there are seven CEC commissioners, including Sablan. The board requires five commissioners to have a quorum, according to Igitol.
Meanwhile, Igitol reminded CNMI residents that today, Friday, is the last day to register to vote for this November election.
As of Wednesday, there were 18,531 registered voters. CEC is currently processing the contract to print an estimated 22,000 ballots.
The CEC board on Wednesday denied a couple’s registration to vote for failing to meet the 120-day residency requirement prior to election day. The couple relocated to Saipan from the U.S. mainland.
