Tina Sablan to host forum for Precinct 2
Christina “Tina” Sablan, an independent candidate for CNMI House of Representatives Precinct 2, invites all residents, business operators, cultural experts, history buffs, environmental champions, health and safety advocates, and other community members who care about revitalizing the villages of Precinct 2, to join in a special forum next week Wednesday, Sept. 12, at the Joeten Daidai Social Hall in Chalan Kanoa (next to Mt. Carmel Cathedral), from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. The forum is titled, “Our Sense of Place.”
“The idea is to bring people together to have a conversation about the strengths of our precinct, and also the needs and opportunities,” Sablan said. “And we’ll start by identifying the places that are important to people—socially, culturally, economically, historically, environmentally. Places in need of repair or cleanup. Places that need to be protected. Places that should be made safer and healthier.
“When we have a strong sense of place, that is, where we are, we can also begin to form a vision for where we want to be,” she added.
Sablan, who holds a master’s degree in urban and regional planning, is teaming up with mapping expert Robbie Greene to present maps of the villages that make up Precinct 2, with a focus on Chalan Kanoa and Susupe.
Forum participants will be asked to identify places in the precinct that are important to them, and the reasons why. One objective for the forum will be a tangible, public product that the community can use to visualize their concerns and valued spaces, and to make decisions.
“Ultimately, our goal is to develop a plan and a set of priorities for Precinct 2 that can help guide our collective activities to make our villages healthier, safer, more livable, and more beautiful,” Sablan said.
“If this process is successful in our precinct, it could be a model for other precincts to consider as well,” she added.
Precinct 2 includes the villages of Chalan Kanoa, Susupe, Fina Sisu, As Lito, and As Perdido.
“Our Sense of Place” is free and open to the public. All are welcome, and light refreshments will be served.
