September is dedicated to preparedness

The month of September has been proclaimed CNMI Preparedness Month to educate every resident of the Commonwealth on how to prepare their homes, businesses, and communities for any emergencies, including natural disasters and potential terrorist attacks.

Homeland Security and Emergency Management Office hosted the proclamation signing of CNMI Preparedness Month last Thursday, in line National Preparedness Month.

Acting governor Victor B. Hocog signed the proclamation.

This year’s theme is “Disasters Happen. Prepare Now. Learn How.” that will highlight the importance of having an emergency plan and exercising it, learning and educating people about life-saving skills, reviewing insurance coverages to understand its importance and ensuring the appropriate protection for residents in times of disasters, and enhancing one’s capability to save for emergencies.

According to HSEM information officer Nadine Deleon Guerrero, HSEM has prepared a series of preparedness awareness trainings for tsunami, earthquakes, and man-made disasters like nuclear attacks or active shootings.

“Bank of Guam…will also teach how to save for emergencies,” she said.

Deleon Guerrero said that different agencies have agreed to partner with HSEM to prepare different emergency kits. “For example, the Maternal and Child Health Bureau will…help prepare kits for new moms,” she said.

Deleon Guerrero said this year’s events will be far bigger than last year and will only continue to grow. “It’s a collaborative effort and it’s going to be a lot bigger than last year…we have other agencies partnering with us and it has really turned into a community effort. I just see this getting bigger and bigger as the years go by,” she said.
