Typhoon won’t affect Saipan
For the most part, the CNMI will be spared the full wrath of Tropical Storm Jebi, which has slowly intensified in the last 24 hours.
According to Nadine Deleon Guerrero, CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency’s public relations officer, Saipan will not be impacted by the threat of Tropical Storm Jebi even if it has already morphed into a typhoon.
Despite this, the typhoon will still be felt in the far northern part of the Marianas, specifically Agrihan, Pagan, and Alamagan—regions that were also impacted when Typhoon Cimaron hit the CNMI a week ago.
Deleon Guerrero said that Tropical Storm Jebi is forecasted to directly hit the Northern Islands and not just pass through.
The CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency has been communicating with the residents of the Northern Islands and said that they are preparing for the storm.
“They are very resilient up there and they have been preparing,” said Deleon Guerrero.
As of 5pm yesterday, Jebi was located about 425 miles east of Alamagan, about 435 miles east of Pagan, about 450 miles east-southeast of Agrihan, about 455 miles east-northeast of Saipan, about 515 miles east-northeast of Rota, and about 560 miles east-northeast of Guam.
Maximum sustained winds of 65 mph can be expected as Tropical Storm Jebi hits and was reported to be moving west-northwest at 12 mph.
Tropical Storm Jebi is moving toward the west-northwest at 12 mph and is expected to make a slight turn toward the west with little change in forward speed through today. Tropical Storm Jebi is forecast to intensify. Maximum sustained winds remain at 65 mph.
Tropical storm force winds extend outward from the center up to 140 miles to the north and up to 105 miles to the south.
