CEC: No drastic spike in number of Tinian voters
For this Nov. 6 general election, there has been no drastic increase in the number of registered voters on Tinian, according to Commonwealth Election Commission executive director Julita Villagomez.
As of yesterday, Tinian has 1,727 registered voters, which is an increase of just 20 to 30 voters from 2016, the last election, Villagomez said.
She said they don’t have the data as to how many of those 1,727 registered voters are currently not on Tinian.
As of yesterday, Rota has 1,957 voters, while Saipan and the Northern Islands have a combined total of 14,545.
This brings the total number of registered voters in the CNMI to 18,229—an all-time high.
In a recent letter to the editor, CNMI historian and former Board of Education member Don Farrell had expressed doubt about CEC’s count of about 1,707 registered Tinian voters at that time.
Farrell said the number is too high; he asked how many are from off-island. He also asked when the final registration will be completed and how will citizens challenge the votes of people who are not eligible.
On the question about challenging the votes, Villagomez said that people can bring the matter before the CEC, which will then make a determination. If they are not satisfied with the CEC’s ruling, they can bring their protest to the Superior Court.
