Weightlifter Angel San Nicolas eyes more tournaments after winning in last month’s 9th Micronesian Games in Yap

“I just got to keep competing until I can’t compete anymore,” said San Nicolas, who swept the three gold medals at stake in the men’s 105-kilogram division in the weightlifting event in the Micro Games.

One of the tournaments he is targeting in the XVI Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa next year.

San Nicolas added that although he won three medals in Yap, that was not his best and he aims for a better showing in upcoming tournaments.

“My preparations for the Micro Games started in January, that was a mistake. I started too early, which meant I peaked too soon. It paid off, but I didn’t perform to my best, and I wanted to show what I can really do,” the 2017 Mini Games bronze medalist said.

“I’m happy for the medals, but I know my best wasn’t put on display that day. It is what it is. Honestly, I was just happy that it was over,” San Nicolas said.

While he was not contended with his own performance, San Nicolas tipped his hat to his teammates—Rodrigo Ada, Bonny Cruz, Antonette Labausa, and Joey Tudela.

“I am so happy for them. They’ve exceeded my expectations. They performed better than I did. Two of them went 6/6 and two went 5/6. Three of them were able to set new personal bests. So I’m really proud of them. I wouldn’t have asked for another team. We bonded pretty well, no drama whatsoever. We were very encouraging of each other, so it couldn’t have gone better,” the weightlifter said.
