Military training at Warning Area 517, FDM, in waters Around Guam
ASAN, Guam
—The U.S. military will conduct training at Warning Area 517 today, Aug. 20, from noon to 7pm, and tomorrow, Aug. 2, from 10am to 2pm.

The military will also conduct training at the island of Farallon de Medinilla from Aug. 20-26, from 7am to 11pm.

Training will also take place in waters near Guam, west of Apra Harbor within a five-mile nautical radius, on Aug. 21, from noon to 10pm, and on Aug. 23-24, from 10pm to 12:30am.

It is recommended the public, fishermen and marine tour operators monitor the Coast Guard broadcast notice to mariners for advisories.

W-517 is activated south of latitude 12° 40’ 00”N. Santa Rosa Reef and Galvez Banks are open for public use. The general location of the training on FDM will be in a 12-nautical mile radius of the island. (PR)

Jury selection today cancelled
This is to inform all prospective jurors on panel “17CS” and “17ES” that the jury selection scheduled for today, Aug. 20, 2018, at 8:30am at the U.S. District Court, Horiguchi Building, Garapan, Saipan, is cancelled until further notice. Video presentation on Amelia Earhart
The Amelia Earhart Memorial Monument, Inc. Group will be featuring a special video presentation on Amelia Earhart at the American Memorial Park on Aug. 23, Thursday, at 7pm. Admission is free and all are invited. This video will feature our Chamorro elders who have seen Amelia Earhart here on Saipan in 1937. Come, listen and talk stories about a woman who opened doors, opportunities, set records, and impacted the world, the U.S., Pacific region, Micronesia, and Saipan. Another presentation will be announced at a later date for the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library. (PR)

Education Summit in September
The Saipan Chamber of Commerce is inviting its members to be a part of a gathering of the Commonwealth’s educational and workforce stakeholders, leaders, agencies, advocates, and policy makers as they discuss the future of education and workforce development in CNMI.

The 2018 Education Summit, organized by representatives of the Northern Marianas College, Public School System, Northern Marianas Trades Institute, Department of Labor, Department of Commerce, Saipan Chamber of Commerce, CNMI Scholarship Office, and other agencies, will be held on Sept 6-8, 2018, at the Saipan World Resort.

The summit aims to lay the foundation of a long-term education plan for the CNMI by providing a forum where key issues like identifying occupational and career trends and building economic and educational opportunities can be discussed.

Veterans affairs visit to Saipan
A U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs benefits counselor will be at the CNMI Military/Veterans Affairs Office on Sept. 5, 2018, from 9am to 4pm. The benefits counselor will be available to answer benefits questions, and assist with the claim process. MHS back gate to be used
Marinas High School said the back gate (Texas Road) will be opened for student dropoff and pickup.  Gates will be open for morning drop off during school days between 7:15am and 8:30am and after school pick up between 3:15pm and 4:30pm.  When using back entrance gate, parents are to make the first right turn upon entering the back gate.  This will bring you to a loop around the gym where you can drop or pick up students. A guard will be present to direct traffic. (PR)

Public library closed on Aug. 25
The Joeten-Kiyu Public Library will be closed on Saturday, Aug. 25, 2018, in celebration of CNMI Labor Day. The library will reopen with regular hours on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2018. MARC Gala set
The Richard F. Taitano Micronesian Area Research Center at the University of Guam will celebrate 50 years of growth as a cultural repository and library with an anniversary gala dinner on Aug. 21 at the Sheraton Laguna Guam Resort’s Ocean Sirena Ballroom. Proceeds from the dinner will be used to fund scholarships for graduate students at UOG.
