Red Cross responds to two home fires

Jack Amirez, Claudine Atalig, Jennifer DL Guerrero, and Richard Defan—all volunteers of the American Red Cross-NMI Chapter—responded to two separate home fires on Saipan in less than a week.
The first incident occurred on Sunday, Aug. 12, 2018, in Koblerville and the second fire happened on Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2018, in Talofofo.
In total, eight families, about 23 individuals, were assisted by the American Red Cross-NMI Chapter, including occupants of the dwellings that were destroyed by the fire, as well as residents near the incident who were unable to remain in their homes due to toxic smoke in the area.
The Red Cross provided clients with their immediate emergency needs for food clothing and shelter.
“We are thankful no one was injured during these two incidents” said J.D. Tenorio, the Emergency Services director for the NMI Chapter of the American Red Cross. “As we continue to help them, we urge everyone to take steps to minimize the risk of a fire occurring in their home.”
In the CNMI, the American Red Cross-NMI Chapter has installed over 600 free smoke alarms throughout Saipan, Tinian, and Rota since October of 2017, making 304 homes safer.
The Red Cross will continue its efforts throughout the year by visiting neighborhoods and installing free smoke alarms on all three the islands.
