3 candidates are out of the Nov. election
Two who filed candidacies as independent bets for the House of Representatives and one non-partisan who filed a candidacy for the Board of Education are out of the race, according to the Commonwealth Election Commission yesterday.
Cecilia R. Taitano, who is formerly with the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, Joseph Muna Mendiola, and Jonathan SN. Sablan are out of the Nov. 6 general election, according to CEC administrative officer Kayla Igitol.
Taitano filed her candidacy as an independent candidate for Precinct 4 of the House of Representatives. However, the CEC later determined that she did not meet the residency requirements.
Precinct 4 covers Tanapag and San Roque areas.
Mendiola filed his candidacy as an independent candidate for Precinct 5 of the House.
Igitol said that Mendiola also did not meet the residency requirements and that the CEC has already notified him.
Precinct 5 covers Kagman.
Mendiola submitted a letter to CEC executive director Julita A. Villagomez Wednesday, to inform them about his withdrawal as a candidate.
“I personally respect the requirements of election laws, provisions, and subsections,” said Mendiola in the letter.
With respect to Sablan, he filed Wednesday his candidacy as a non-partisan bet for Board of Education Tinian position.
Igitol said Sablan, however, emailed CEC yesterday afternoon his notice to withdraw as candidate.
Wednesday was the deadline to submit candidacy papers. With Taitano, Mendiola, and Sablan out of the race, there are now 94 candidates vying for 45 positions.
Villagomez said the drawing of candidates’ slot in the ballots for Saipan and Rota will be held today, Friday.
The drawing of candidates’ slot for Tinian was done Wednesday.
The CEC board will conduct a meeting on Aug. 15 for the certification of candidates.
