Northern Marianas Sports Association will have its monthly meeting tonight with the selection of the top athlete awardees for July at the forefront of its agenda.

Nominees for the Male and Female Athletes of the Month and the Tan Siu Lin Foundation/NMSA Student Male and Female Athletes of the Month will come from the participants in the two big off-island tournaments the CNMI competed in—the 9th Micronesian Games in Yap and the 2018 Pacific Oceania Junior Championships in Fiji.

In the past years, NMSA handed the monthly awards to the gold medal winners in the Micro Games, however the final decision on the selection of athletes will still depend on the votes of the attendees of tonight’s meeting at 7pm at the conference room of the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

In last month’s Micro Games, athletics’ Rachel Abrams and Zarinae Sapong won one gold medal each, while weightlifters Angel San Nicolas and Antonette Labausa earned three golds apiece. Swimmer Kento Akimaru also got a gold.

As for the POJC, Robbie Schorr won the boys U16 singles title in the annual competition after pulling off upsets against two higher-ranked opponents. The CNMI junior tennis player’s outstanding showing in the POJC makes him a strong candidate for the male student-athlete award.

For the female student-athlete selection, the likely candidates are athletics’ Jerlyn Castillo, Jamie Pangelinan, and Therize Millare, who also brought home medals from Yap.

For the Team of the Month plum, the candidates may include the baseball and men’s canoe teams, which each won a silver medal in the Micro Games.
