House OKs 6-year nursing scholarships

The House of Representatives has unanimously passed a Senate measure that creates a nursing scholarship with a six-year running time.
The House voted during their July 30 session on Capitol Hill to support Senate President Arnold I. Palacios’ (R-Saipan) Senate Bill 20-71 after amendments made by the House Education Committee led by Rep. Edwin Aldan (R-Tinian).
At a June 26, 2018, meeting, the committee extended the running time of the scholarship from five years to six while also lifting the limitation of only three students each from Rota and Tinian.
S.B. 20-71 creates 20 scholarship slots for students working on a nursing degree at the Northern Marianas College or abroad and provides funds of up to $8,000 per annum, given that they serve in the CNMI after they graduate. The bill calls for two years of services in public clinics or three years of service in private clinics per year of assistance.
Gov. Ralph DLG Torres told Saipan Tribune in a previous interview that he is looking forward to enacting legislation that provides financial assistance to students pursuing nursing degrees.
The bill now heads to the Senate for approval or rejection before heading to the governor’s desk for enactment.
