High surf, small craft advisories today
A high surf advisory and small craft advisory remain in effect until 6am today, Monday, across the Marianas, according to the CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point, based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam.
There is a high risk of rip currents through 6am Monday, with hazardous surf of 9 to 11 feet persisting along west facing reefs.
It said that Typhoon Shanshan located northeast of the Marianas will cause monsoon winds and westerly swells across the region for the next couple of days. A large west swell and wind waves generated by a monsoon wind surge will produce hazardous surf and a high risk of rip currents.
Southwest winds of 15 to 20 with gusts as high as 25 knots are expected. Seas could reach 7 to 9 feet. The combination of the wind and seas will maintain hazardous conditions for operators of small craft.
The public is advised to avoid venturing near reef lines and beaches, especially those facing west. Large breaking waves can knock you down and cause serious injuries. Strong rip currents will be life threatening. If you become caught in a rip current, swim parallel to shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to swim directly against a rip current.
Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid sailing in these conditions. (EOC)
