Japanese Society of Northern Marianas cleanup on Aug. 11

The Japanese Society of Northern Marianas will conduct their annual volunteer cleanup on Aug. 11.

The cleanup will be at Japanese Peace Memorial in Marpi from 8:45am to around 11:30am and the Japanese Cemetery in Susupe from 8:45am to around 10am.

Everyone is highly welcome and appreciated to join the cleanup. Volunteers should bring drinking water and gloves.

4 Saipan beaches red-flagged

The Division of Environmental Quality has red-flagged four Saipan beaches and is advising the public not to fish or swim within 300 feet of these locations for the next 48 hours or until otherwise notified.

Affected sites are American Memorial Park, Garapan Fishing Dock, Garapan Beach Drainage #3, and Garapan Beach.

Samples collected from these locations contained excessive concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria (enterococci) that exceeded the CNMI Marine Water Quality Standards. These bacteria can indicate the presence of human and animal waste in the water.

DEQ analyzes water samples collected from Saipan’s recreational beaches and storm drainage every Tuesday. For more information, contact DEQ at 664-8500. (PR)

NMC info session on today

Individuals interested in furthering their education or expanding their income potential are encouraged to attend the Northern Marianas College information sessions today, Aug. 2, 2018, from 5:30pm to 6:30pm at NMC’s Cafe Proa, located at the college’s As Terlaje campus. Cafe Proa is located near the NMC Bookstore. Roundtrip shuttle service will be provided from Tanapag and Kagman on each day that the info session is held. Pick up times from Tanapag Middle School and the Kagman Market will be at 4:30pm, and the return dropoff time from NMC back to Tanapag and Kagman will be at 7pm.

The session will cover topics that include degree programs, financial aid options, the Prior Learning Assessment program, admissions, and other topics.

Military training at Warning Area 517, FDM

ASAN, Guam—The U.S. military will conduct training at Warning Area 517 on Aug. 1-2, from 3pm to 11pm.

The military will also conduct training at the island of Farallon de Medinilla on Aug. 3-5, from 10am to 10pm.

It is recommended the general public, fishermen and marine tour operators monitor the Coast Guard broadcast notice to mariners for advisories.

W-517 is activated south of latitude 12° 40’ 00”N. Santa Rosa Reef and Galvez Banks are open for public use.

The general location of the training on the island of Farallon de Medinilla will be in a 12-nautical mile radius of the island. (PR)
