The Board of Regents of the Northern Marianas College approved yesterday the revival of its programs committee and finance and budget panel during its regular meeting where they also indicated their desire to reinstate the chief financial administrative officer position which was recently eliminated by college management.

Board chair Juan T. Lizama appointed regent Frank Rabauliman to head the finance and budget committee, while vice chair Elaine Orilla was named head of the programs committee of the board. The two were given the authority to select their members from the regents, both voting and honorary.

Lizama, during the deliberation, emphasized the importance of these committees in addressing the remaining concerns of the college accreditation.

Yesterday was the first meeting conducted by the board after receiving the accreditation commission’s decision that placed NMC on continued probation status early this month.

It has until October this year to address the remaining deficiencies cited in the recommendation.

From 11 deficiencies, NMC successfully resolved eight of them. The institution is now addressing three remaining concerns in addition to two new recommendations pertaining to the lack of CFAO and certain policies in place.

NMC president Sharon Y. Hart, meantime, expressed support on the revival of the committees citing the help it could bring to the management in addressing its fiscal and budget concerns.

Besides the revival of the committees, Lizama expressed in the beginning of the meeting the board’s support in reinstating the CFAO position. However, the formal voting for this item and the hiring of a qualified candidate did not take place yesterday as the board voted to recess the meeting to Thursday.

“Based on my discussion with the trustees [board regents], there’s a need to revive that CFAO position and that will be the position of the board,” said Lizama, pointing the specific requirements of accreditation commission to have someone in the position.
