16 take part in fisheries class
Sixteen high school students on Saipan took part in the 2018 High School Summer Fisheries course funded by office of the Western Pacific Regional Management Council.
Josh Villagomez, a ChaCha Ocean View Middle School science teacher who coordinated the program, said he felt that students “will greatly benefit” from the program. He said it enabled high school students to think about a possible career in the fisheries industry.
The program was held at the ChaCha Ocean View Middle School where students met with presenters in class and took field trips. In the curriculum, students learned about fish biology and habitat, fishing techniques, traditional canoe skills and management, fish data collection, fish management process, fishery enforcement, aquaculture, CPR certification, seafood/fish preparation, and coral reef health.
WPRFMC program director Jack Ogumoro established the course to strengthen students’ fishery skills. It offers students a two-week fishery management course and a hands-on glimpse of possible career choices in the field. The course began last July 9 and ended on July 20.
