Tourists at the Paseo de Marianas were treated to a performance of the Saipan Awaodori Team last Saturday—the first of what is slated to become a regular weekend event.

During the performance, many of the Saipan Awaodori Team members interacted with tourists, teaching them the intricate steps of this uniquely Japanese dance form.

Sonia Siwa, coordinator of the Saipan Awaodori Team, said the purpose of this weekend’s performances is for the entertainment of tourists, allowing visitors to mingle and blend with local kids here on Saipan.

She said the Saipan Awaodori Team will be performing every weekend at Paseo de Marianas starting at 7pm.

Siwa said that they are still accepting new recruits for the team. The group is now busy rehearsing for upcoming performances on events such as Taste of the Marianas, Flame Tree Festival, and other Marianas Visitors Authority events.

Siwa said that the Saipan Awaodori Team practices on Tuesday and Wednesday from 4pm to 5:30pm at Koblerville Youth Center. Registration is free and open to children 5 to 6 years of age.
