Kaipat: We need to teach tourists to take care of our environment
A former representative and assistant attorney general, in her public hearing to serve in the Marianas Visitors Authority board, said that educating tourists to care for the CNMI environment needs to remain a priority.
Cinta Kaipat, Gov. Ralph DLG Torres’ nominee to the MVA board of directors, believes that cooperation is key to ensure tourist safety and environmental conservation.
Kaipat, in an interview yesterday after her public hearing held by the Senate Committee on Executive Appointments and Governmental Investigations chaired by Sen. Francisco Cruz (R-Tinian), said that cooperation might be achieved with airlines to play educational videos so that tourists may be informed of what to do and what not to do on the beaches and on the streets.
“We must protect our environment and offer them the best of our coral reefs and beaches. We need to involve everyone in this,” she said.
“My concern is the tourists that come here and drive and endanger the lives of our community, so we need to work with the tour operators, the Department of Public Safety—everyone to ensure safety,” she said, adding that there is so much to improve on.
“I [believe] that if we just take things one at a time and address them fully [instead of] pointing fingers…we can come together in a desire to come up with solutions,” she added.
Kaipat has been previously appointed to the Parole Review Board and the Historic Preservations Review board under the late former governor Pedro “Teno” P. Tenorio and another term under former governor Juan N. Babauta. Kaipat also served as a member to the Criminal Justice Planning Agency board during former governor Benigno Fitial’s tenure as well as served as a representative during the 15th Legislature.
