DPW eyes traffic lights at Quartermaster
The Department of Public Works is currently looking at installing new traffic signal lights at an intersection connecting Beach Road and Middle Road.
According to a communication to the House Public Utilities and Communications Committee chair Rep. Francisco Dela Cruz (R-Saipan) and Senate Public Utilities, Transportation, and Communications Committee chair Sen. Sixto K. Igisomar (R-Saipan), DPW updated its four-year Territorial Transportation Improvement Plan, or TTIP, to include installing new traffic signal lights for the Quartermaster Intersection on Beach Road.
Federal Highway Administration territorial representative Boday Borres amended on June 26, 2018 the TTIP during her visit to Saipan last week to reflect the installation of the traffic signal lights.
“The amendment included the Beach Road/Quartermaster Intersection and Kopa DeOro Road Route 30 Chalan Pale Arnold to install a new traffic signal system and other projects,” DPW secretary James Ada told both chairs.
Igisomar during yesterday’s Senate session commented on the issue, informing his colleagues at the Senate of the amendment.
“…Help support DPW to…enhance the intersection at Quartermaster or Beach Road considering that we have had a lot of accidents there. We are hoping that this [streetlight] can minimize the amount of accidents there,” he said.
Igisomar noted that he has been communicating with DPW through Senate President Arnold I. Palacios (R-Saipan) and Gov. Ralph DLG Torres.
While the communication indicated of DPW’s intention to add a new streetlight on the intersection, it did not indicate whether it has identified funding for the project.
