The family of bartender Emerita Relata Romero is planning to bring her remains to the Philippines for burial this weekend, but Department of Public Safety commissioner Ramon Mafnas said “that is not going to happen.”
In a news briefing on Monday, Mafnas said Romero’s remains can only be flown to the Philippines until all the forensic evaluations are performed.
“Some of the procedures will be done here and some will be done off-island,” the commissioner said.
Estrellita “Lhet” Relata told Saipan Tribune yesterday that they are unsure as to when the authorities are going to give them the go-signal to bring their sister Romero to Bulacan, Philippines.
Romero’s husband and two daughters-ages 17 and 8 years old-are in the Philippines.
Mafnas urged people who were in Marpi, particularly at the Marianas Resort area and those who probably saw the suspect or the car that the suspect used, to come forward.
Mafnas also asked residents to report to the police or Crime Stoppers if they believe that their family member is the killer.
He said if a person noticed that a family member has scratches or injuries on the body or arms, that individual should ask about the injuries and the person’s whereabouts that morning of Feb. 5.
Romero was last seen boarding a green or blue tinted sedan around 3am on Feb. 5 in Garapan. FBI agents found her body two days later at the northernmost building of the former La Fiesta Mall in San Roque.
Mafnas has refused to release to the media the autopsy results conducted by Guam chief medical examiner Aurelio Espinola on Romero.
