Torres eyes tighter relationship with Pohnpei
Gov. Ralph DLG Torres is shooting toward a closer relationship between the CNMI and Pohnpei.
During a press conference last week, Torres stated that he is vying for a closer relationship with Pohnpei and ultimately, all throughout Micronesia.
“We are all Micronesians,” said Torres. “I believe that strengthening that relationship is paramount for us to [be assisted] on our current issues, such as the CW issue, and work together as one Micronesia,” he said.
Torres in June 26, 2018 was bestowed a traditional lordship status from the nanmwarki of Madolenihmw, Pohnpei, or the king of Pohnpei, during a traditional sakau ceremony at the Garapan Central Park. He was given the name “Luahk” and first lady Diann Torres was given the name of “Luahkpei.”
Torres said strengthening ties with Pohnpei has long been ongoing. He noted that the CNMI has donated two vehicles for their police department; one ambulance; and two Department of Public Safety officers to train their police force.
“…They graduated close to 80 officers,” said Torres.
“We are working on extending training for fire and emergency services,” he said, noting that he wishes to start this month.
“We continue to help each other, whether in Pohnpei or here,” he said. “When you tie this relationship, it is about trust and working together.”
Torres said that in a recent meeting with the Pohnpeian king and members of the Pohnpeian government, they decided to work together to allow some form of government protection from the CNMI.“That is something we are [still] figuring out. Also, we are looking at registering companies that are already trying to seek employees from the Federated States of Micronesia,” he said.
“I am looking forward to it along with FSM President Peter M. Christian, [who also] wanted to look for opportunities for the people of FSM.”
