A 69-year-old woman reportedly drowned while swimming on Managaha Island yesterday morning.

Department of Public Safety information officer Jacqueline Rae Shepard said the victim, a Chinese national, was taken to the Commonwealth Health Center, where a medical staff pronounced her dead at 10:50am.

Shepard said DPS received a call about a drowning incident on Managaha Island at 10:34am.

Investigation showed that the victim was swimming with her sister. The sister told her to swim in the shallow area while she stepped away. When the sister returned, the victim was already lying on the sand and bystanders had already called 911.

Managaha staff arrived with the victim at the Smiling Cove Marina at 10:46am. Medics who were standing by brought the victim to CHC.
