SBL suspends games for Micro Games
The 2018 Saipan Baseball League has suspended matches in the regular season to give way to the CNMI Baseball Team’s preparation for the Micronesian Games.
Games will resume once the national squad returns to Saipan from Yap, which will host the quadrennial meet from July 15 to 27. Players suiting up for the CNMI are from the teams participating in the league, which is on the final stage of the double-round robin elimination.
The Chalan Kanoa Bears lead the league with their 15-1 record and will need to win one of their two remaining matches to seal the pennant. The Bears got their 15th victory and seventh straight in the second round of the elimination after crushing the Blue Jays last week, 20-1, at the Francisco “Tan Ko” Palacios Ballfield.
The league-leaders scored even runs each in the fifth and seventh inning to set up the easy win. The Blue Jays posted their lone run at the bottom of the first inning before being shut down the rest of the way.
Kiku and A.J. Lizama paced the Bears, as they both went 4-for-5 at bat. Kiku scored five runs and had two RBIs, while A.J. made two runs and two RBIs.
In other results last week, the Mariners edged Titanium, 12-11.
Ton Tenorio made the game-winning hit with his single bringing James Fleming home at the bottom of the ninth inning.
