The CNMI State Workforce Development Board recently completed regional Technical Assistance Training sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration Region VI of San Francisco.

Training was held at the Kapiolani Community College campus in Honolulu, Hawaii and covered strategic workforce board training; performance and program intensive, and fiscal grant management.

The two-day training, facilitated by Maher and Maher, taught strategies and best practices to improve the engagement of the board and enhance sector partnerships to further advancements in performance and adherence with the visions of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act.

John Bailey, acting regional administrator for USDOL-ETA Region VI San Francisco, was impressed with the new level of commitment by Gov. Ralph DLG Torres and his administration to ensure the CNMI’s participation.

“The CNMI has progressed swiftly,” he said.

Torres said that since the official convening of the SWDB in January, strategies to build a local workforce have garnered more support in the private sector.

“The CNMI Workforce Development Board continues to build on its existing resources and training to address the best way tackle our workforce shortage, and it will continue to be a critical priority for us moving forward. I’ve stated earlier that we need to focus our efforts toward building our U.S. workforce now and in the long run. Workforce innovation and opportunities need to be adaptive to our development activities, capacity, and policies and the CWDB has my full support,” Torres said.

Labor Secretary Vicky Benavente noted that the SWBC also visited the American Job Center of the State of Hawaii’s Workforce Development Division, noting that the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act or WIOA authorizes the AJC or One-Stop Center and calls for the co-location of the WIOA Core Programs as well as other community partners.

Hawaii AJC manager Eric Pascua guided the CNMI team on a comprehensive tour of the center and services provided to Hawaii residents. (PR)
