The Saipan Marianas Lions Club and the Saipan Alliance Lions Club have banded together and made a large donation of rice to the Kristo Rai Parish.
The donation forms part of the five centennial service challenges for the two Lions clubs based on Saipan: Youth, environment, vision, diabetes, and hunger.
The Saipan Marianas Lions Club and the Saipan Alliance Lions Club turned over 50 bags of rice at 10 lbs apiece Wednesday to Kristo Rai Parish to complete the “relieving hunger’” part of their centennial service challenge. Fr. Ken Hezel received the donation on behalf of the parish.
According to Ladyvir Canape, Kristo Rai Parish has reported that some members of the congregation have asked from time to time whether the church can spare some food. Hezel said that people would randomly approach him and ask if there is available food to share. This prompted the two Lions clubs to link arms for this purpose.
At the end of the day, Canape said, their main goal as Lions is to give as much as they possibly can to serve the needs of the community.
Canape said the funding for the rice came from both clubs’ fundraising events held throughout the year.
