Bears down Ballistics, likely to take pennant in SBL
The Chalan Kanoa Bears are poised to get the pennant in the 2018 Saipan Baseball League as they continued their run in the second round of the regular season.
The Bears improved to a 14-1 record following their 12-9 triumph over the Ballistics last Monday night at the Francisco “Tan Ko” Palacios Ballfield. The 2016 champions are still undefeated in the second round, notching their sixth straight win and will need only one more victory to officially bag the pennant. The Bears will have their last three games against the Blue Jays, Falcons, and Indians (make-up).
Down, 3-4, after three complete innings, the Bears used a six-run top of the fourth to grab the lead and foil the Ballistics’ bid for an upset and continue their streak, which has been going on for more than three months. The Bears dropped their opener against the defending champions Aces, 4-14, before sweeping the last eight matches in the first round of the regular season and going 6-0 in the second.
Shortstop A.J. Lizama led the Bears in the pivotal top of the fourth, as he hit a two-RBI double and also stole home. Jose and Henry Lizama added an RBI single each.
The Ballistics, which had a 5-9 mark pending results of last Wednesday and yesterday’s matches, threatened the Bears at the bottom of the ninth after scoring four runs. However, closer Shakobe Rangamar got back-to-back strikeouts and second baseman Henry Lizama and A.J. Lizama teamed up for a 4-6 play on Jay Camacho to end the match.
In other results, Titanium cruised past the Blue Jays last Tuesday, 11-2. Titanium notched its ninth win in 15 games, while the Blue Jays fell to a 4-9 card.
After allowing Blue Jays to score two runs in the third inning, Titanium shut down its foes in the last six for the easy win.
