The semis cast in the girls U12 singles of the 2012 White Coconut Tennis Classic were completed over the weekend.
Making it to the Final Four were top seed Carol Lee, Sakura Imaya, Julia Ishikawa, and Isabel Heras. Lee drew a bye in the first round and advanced to the semis after shutting out Sally Hwang last Sunday at the American Memorial Park tennis courts, 8-0. Hwang marched into the quarterfinals after an 8-5 victory against Hana Nelson. Imaya also had a bye in the opening round and set up a semis duel against Lee, following an 8-1 triumph over Liza Atalig.
In the lower half of the draw, Ishikawa needed extra minutes to thwart Tania Tan, 9-7, and arranged a semis battle against Heras, who whipped Ami Tsukagoshi, 8-2. Tsukagoshi survived the first round with an 8-4 win against Grace Choi last Saturday.
The semis and final matches will be played this weekend.
In other results in Week 1 of the Coconut Classic, Malika Miyawaki and Gillian Villagomez booked the first two semis tickets in the girls U10 singles. Villagomez moved into the next round after a 6-3 win over Sakura Sato, while Miyawaki blanked Asia Raulerson, 6-0. Catherine Atalig, Anna Calvert, Ruth Park, and Mimi Sakano fought for the last two semis seats last Sunday, but results of their matches were unavailable at press time.
In the girls U15 and U18 singles, preliminary results show Carol Lee beating Emily Jones, 8-4, and Theecel Minor prevailing over Alina Ishikawa, 8-4. Both events have a round-robin format and winners will only be determined after Week 2 of the competition. Amy Arenovski and Jodel Fernandez are also playing in the girls U18, while Negahr Rastguiy, Adele Hudkins, and Mikayla Lopez are the three other entries in the girls U15 singles.
Some players in the U15 and U18 are also participating in the women’s singles. Lopez and Fernandez automatically advanced to the semis after drawing byes in the opening round. Rastguiy and Sakiko Eda completed the Final Four cast after downing separate foes last Saturday. Ratguiy won over Mei Demapan, 8-2, while Eda topped Kinumi Taniguchi, 8-3.
