NMTI partners with MINA for Wing Beach cleanup
Sixteen students from the Northern Marianas Trade Institute, together with their Island Ecology instructor, Maureen Sebangiol, and Micronesian Islands Nature Alliance’s Tasi Watch rangers, Delfin Camacho and Daniel Kaipat, participated in a cleanup at Wing Beach on June 8 in recognition of World Ocean Day.
Sebangiol invited MINA to her classroom the previous day to do a presentation on the work that MINA does, and the importance of community involvement in these efforts.
“These students are the first cohort working to achieve their diplomas through the NMTI’s Adult Vocational Technical High School,” said Sebangiol. “Getting them out of the classroom and on to the beach helps them understand how much difference each person doing the right thing to maintain our island’s beauty can make.”
Expressing surprise at the limited amount of trash found at Wing Beach, one student said, “It looks like the message that MINA is getting out to the community about keeping litter off the beaches is starting to sink in. If only those who use the beach pavilions on the weekends would get it, that would be real progress.”
The students left the cleanup, vowing to stay committed and involved in the work of keeping the CNMI’s “land and sea litter-free.”
