Hundreds celebrate PH independence day
Despite the heat and the unpredictable weather, the 120th Philippine Independence Day celebration organized by the United Filipino Organization last Sunday drew hundreds to the covered parking lot of Marianas Business Plaza.
Despite the short time organizers had to prepare for the event this year, the crowd at the 2018 Pistang Pinoy was undoubtedly larger and far more interactive compared to last year’s Pistang Pinoy.
“The crowd this time is more lively because of the good show that our contestants were giving and the audience was very responsive,” said United Filipino Organization president Marlon Regaton.
According to Regaton, the success of this year’s celebration was due to the support of the entire community.
“UFO would not have any successful events without…everyone, especially our kababayans [compatriots] who keep participating. …It is not about what was prepared, it’s about the response and the participation,” he said.
One of highlight of this year’s Pistang Pinoy was a song and dance competition. The twist to the singing competition was the age limit that was implemented. Only those aged 50 and over were allowed to participate.
UFO also included a free health screening, which turned out to be a hit, gaining the participation of both Filipinos and non-Filipinos.
Regaton said they had a good number of health screening participants and those who availed of the free haircuts UFO offered. “We were able to list down over 50 participants from 8am to 11am,” he said.
The actual date of Philippine Independence Day is today, June 12.
