Senate to start budget talks
Budget talks are well under way as the Senate last Friday announced its intention to conduct budget hearings for the fiscal year 2019.
Sen. Jude Hofschneider (R-Tinian) wants the Senate Fiscal Affairs Committee, which he chairs, to prioritize the budget needs of Tinian and Rota, as well as needs of the police and first responders.
The House of Representatives’ Ways and Means Committee is already in the middle of budget hearings.
The Senate committee would meet with the Department of Public Safety and the Department of Fire and Emergence Medical Services on June 13 at the Senate chamber on Capital Hill at 9:30am and 1:30am, respectively.
The following day, June 14, 2018, the committee would head to Tinian to meet with the Tinian Mayor’s Office and the Tinian Municipal Council at the Casino Gaming Control Commission conference room on Tinian at 1pm and 4pm, respectively.
Rota budget hearings would commence on June 19, with a meeting with the Rota Mayor’s Office at 9:30am in the mayor’s conference room at the Antonio C. Atalig Memorial Library in Songsong. An afternoon meeting would be held with the Rota Municipal Council at the same venue.
The announcements did not specify any additional meetings with other government agencies.
Gov. Ralph DLG Torres has until Oct. 1, 2018, to approve a budget for fiscal year 2019, otherwise the government shuts down.
