Woman sentenced to prison for harboring illegal aliens

A female Chinese national was sentenced on June 1, 2018, to eight months in prison for harboring illegal aliens in the CNMI.
Qi Xiufang was also directed to pay a $4,000 fine and a $100 special assessment fee. She will be placed on one year of supervised release and will immediately deported after serving her sentence. The case was handled by Chief Judge Ramona V. Manglona.
Qi concealed from detection several illegal workers who had entered Saipan to work at the Best Sunshine hotel and casino construction site on Saipan.
Shawn N. Anderson, U.S. Attorney for the Districts of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, said, “Tourists cannot legally work in the United States, including the Northern Mariana Islands. Those entering for such illegal employment are often inexperienced and more susceptible to serious injury on the job. The contractors who employ tourists rarely pay minimum wage or supply the proper safety equipment. This case demonstrates the continuing efforts of the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security in combating the harboring and employment of illegal aliens and those who aid and abet this unlawful activity.”
