Mt. Carmel School’s Class of 1990 recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior who won the scholarship by submitting an application that focused on a desire to return from college to give back to the islands.

The AlumKnights presented its second scholarship award to Theresa Zheng at the MCS awards ceremony on May 31, 2018.

In her online application, Zheng aims to become a certified pharmacist.

“I hope to come back to Saipan one day and open up my own pharmacy…[that will] not only create more jobs but also a guidance service for students interested in the pharmacy field.”

During her senior year at MCS, Zheng created the MCS ECO Club, which hosted various beach cleanups, collected plastic bottles for recycling, and other beautification efforts.

“The quality of our island will always be an issue that I am passionate about,” Zheng said. “I want to be a part of organizations such MINA, so I can give back to the CNMI by working toward the preservation of our islands.”

Zheng will attend Northeastern University this fall.

During the award presentation, MCS alumna Donna Flores said the intent of the scholarship program is to support the applicant’s goals. “Our interest is the applicant’s intent and desire in coming home and helping our islands grow and develop—as most of my fellow classmates are doing now in various capacities within our public and private sectors.” (PR)
