UOG search for president names new finalists

Dr. Hamid Shirvani, one of the three finalists invited to visit the University of Guam next week, has withdrawn from the presidential search and will therefore not be visiting the campus.

The two previously announced finalists, Dr. Thomas W. Krise and Dr. Bruce T. Murphy, are still a part of the search.

In light of Shirvani’s withdrawal, the presidential search committee has decided to invite two semifinalists: Dr. Anita Borja Enriquez and Dr. Ronald Larsen to become finalists.

The university’s last president, Dr. Robert Underwood, has retired and is currently the interim university president.

The next step in the process is for all finalists to meet with various stakeholders. The finalists will meet with current elected leaders like the Guam governor, speaker of the Legislature, as well as students, faculty, staff, and alumni of the university. This will give stakeholders the opportunity to get to know the finalists better and understand their perspectives on important matters.

After the meetings, with input from the community, it will be up to the UOG board of regents o make their final selection. A list of the meetings taking place will be published in the university’s website, www.uog.edu by the end of the week.

Petition

On a related matter, the PSC is aware that there is a petition to ask the legislative oversight chair as well as the BOR to halt the current hiring process and to change it. The committee respects the rights of individuals to organize the petition and for citizens to sign it.

“The concerns of these individuals have certainly been discussed and are understood by the PSC; however, the presidential search will continue as planned and announced,” said William Leon Guerrero, chairman of the UOG Presidential Search Committee. “The integrity of the search process has remained intact since its start and it is now even more critical to allow the process to run its full course with the BOR making the final decision.” (PR)
