Island Snapshots – June 2018
- PICNIC PESTS A typical Monday morning finds the hardworking crews of the Division of Parks and Recreation doing what they do: picking up other people’s trash. These images were taken at two beachside pavilions in Oleai on Monday morning, June 4. Although drum cans are placed strategically at these pavilions, many picnic-goers still throw their mess on the ground, oftentimes right next to the trash cans, leaving it for others to pick up. The crews from Parks and Recreation who are sent out every Monday morning to do trash pickup are dedicated to what they do. “Remember,” said one of the crew members interviewed at this particular location in Oleai, “all the foam plates, plastic bottles, cigarette butts, bags, and other plastic items get blown right into the lagoon. This kills our sea life, and pollution destroys our environment. This is our island, this is our home. Let’s keep it clean!” Summer is here, school’s out, and it’s a time for family beach outings. It’s also a time to remember that it’s everyone’s responsibility to “keep our land and sea litter free.” (Contributed Photo)
