Over 500 luminaries lit in honor of fallen heroes
Over 500 luminaries lit up the American Memorial Park last Friday in memory of all those who lost their lives in battle.
In honor of Memorial Day, the National Park Service lit up luminaries in memory of each soldier whose names are engraved on AMP’s Court of Honor walls.
One luminary was lit for every group of 10 soldiers. According to National Park Service park ranger Brooke Nevitt, there are over 5,204 names engraved on the Court of Honor walls.
“We hope people will come during the weekend and just walk and enjoy and take the time to remember the sacrifices that our Armed Forces have given us in honor of Memorial Day,” she said.
The luminaries were lit on Friday evening and will remain lit for the duration of Memorial Day last Monday for individuals who want to pay their respects to fallen heroes.
Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang also recognized all the heroes that served in the U.S. Armed Forces and lost their lives in the process.
“The sacrifices and pain of achieving peace and securing a safe nation are immeasurable. We can only remember our brothers and sisters who gave the ultimate sacrifices for peace and lost their lives protecting it…We must honor and remember all fallen Armed Forces soldiers…and give them the appreciation for giving us the opportunity to enjoy living in a peaceful and secured nation. There is hardly any one of us can do to return the sacrifices and losses they encountered,” he said.
Apatang also thanks all those who are still currently serving the country.
“To all surviving family members and to those who are still serving our nation in the Armed Forces…thank you for your services,” he said.
