Team CNMI member Frederick Dean Michael Guintu cracked the Top 10 of the Math League national finals, with the Commonwealth bets ending up third overall in the Team Relay event in competitions held Saturday at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Jushua Qiu and Kichang Jeong joined Guintu, a ninth grader at Saipan International School, in the CNMI team that finished tied for third with Waverly-Shell Rock Community Schools and Valley Christian High in the relay event.

Guintu had a total score of 68 points to finish 10th in the individual category, with 30 and 38 in the Target and Sprint events. He was a point behind a competitor from Iowa City West High.

This could be the first time that a student from the CNMI managed to clinch a Top 10 spot in the Math League national finals, which gathers more than 300 participants from all U.S. states and territories.

It was the fifth time that Guintu, who finished second in the CNMI MathCourt State Championship last month, has represented the CNMI in the national finals. He has been competing in the CNMI MathCourt on Saipan since Kindergarten.

The CNMI also came in ninth in the Team Sweepstakes with 112.833 points, just 1.667 points short of eighth-placer Blue Valley Southwest.

The team—coached by Manny Borja and Dina Duenas—left last Thursday, May 17, and will return to the CNMI today, May 22.

Surui Huan, James Lee, and Junhee Lee are the other members of the CNMI Math League team.
